The City of Bowling Green Department of Public Utilities (Municipal Utilities) is responsible for the management and operation of the city-owned utilities which includes Electric Distribution, Water Treatment, Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection, and Water Pollution Control. The department is governed by a five-member Board of Public Utilities, appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council of the City of Bowling Green. Board Members are selected from various wards of the city and are appointed to five-year terms. Board members can be reappointed for additional terms. The Board of Public Utilities meets in the City Administrative Services Building on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 5:00 P.M. in the Bowling Green City Council Chamber, 304 N. Church Street. All meetings are open to the public. This facility meets ADA requirements.
The general operations and management of the Utilities Department are the responsibility of the Utilities Director. The Director is appointed by the Mayor subject to confirmation by the Board of Public Utilities. The Utilities Director is Brian O’Connell, PE.
The Utilities Director also represents the City of Bowling Green and 14 other local municipal electric utilities as the Northwest AMP Service Group representative on the Board of Trustees of American Municipal Power, Inc. and on various sub-committees of American Municipal Power, Inc.
The Utilities Department staff assists all Utilities Divisions in customer service, preparing bid documents and contracts, preparation and securing legal documents, monitoring revenues and expenditures, and coordinating with other city departments.
